We found out today that we are going to have a baby boy! This is so exciting. Now we can start thinking about names and how to decorate the nursery. Looks like the ancient Chinese calendar was right!
Everything else looked great at the ultrasound, too. The spine looked well-formed (no spina bifida). The heart has 4 chambers. The baby had some amniotic fluid in his belly, so that means the esophagus is working.
We clearly saw both feet, and one of the hands (the other one was tucked up under so we couldn't see it very well). The lip was fully formed (no cleft lip). The brain looked good. The umbilical cord had three distinct vessels.
We're measuring right on target with our little guy. He weighs about as much as 3 sticks of butter.
The heartbeat at this appointment was 154 bpm.
The first ultrasound picture shows the boy parts. It's a cross section, which is kind of like looking from the bottom. His little boy parts are between his two thighs.
The second ultrasound picture shows the baby's face. The eyes, chin and top of the head are clearly marked.
The third ultrasound picture shows the boy parts from a different angle.
The fourth ultrasound picture shows the baby's face again.
Our next appointment is scheduled for July 12, 2002.
