Quick appointment and AFP Test

Alpha-Fetoprotein (AFP)
(from BabyZone.com)

A plasma protein normally produced by the fetus' liver. AFP eventually finds its way into the mother's blood and the amniotic fluid. When too much or too little AFP enters the mother's blood stream it can be a sign of fetal problems, such as birth defects.

High AFP levels in the mother's blood indicates an increased risk of fetal spina bifida, anencephaly, or other malformations. Low AFP levels are associated with an increased risk of Down Syndrome (trisomy 21) and other chromosomal problems.

AFP testing is offered to almost all pregnant women in the U.S. Measuring the AFP level is not sufficiently accurate in screening for Downs- AFP testing should be combined with other tests.

We just had a quick appointment today. We listened to the heartbeat and our questions answered.

So far I've gained almost 5 pounds. Dr. Baer says that gain is on the low side, but okay, since some women gain weight faster in the later weeks of the trimester.

Dr. Baer wants to see us again in 4 weeks. At that time, we will have a full ultrasound with the sonagrapher. And, if the baby cooperates, we will find out if we are having a boy or a girl. That appointment is set for June 13, 2002.

The heartbeat is now around 160 bpm.

Today they did a blood test called an AFP Screening. This blood test is supposed to help determine if our baby is at risk for several genetic abnormalities, like Down's syndrome, spina bifida and anencephaly, among others. If the test is positive, that doesn't necessarily mean that something is wrong. They would have us do another blood test and a hospital ultrasound to follow up. If they find anything with the ultrasound, they would recommend an amniocentesis. This is something we have already decided we would not do, due to risk of miscarriage.

AFP Results

Great news! We got the results of the AFP screening today, and it came back normal!

On the fun side of pregnancy, I've finally popped out and actually look pregnant instead of just fat :) So now I get to shop for maternity clothes to go along with the maternity clothes that my friends are lending me.
